Origins of Thai massage
Many people are unaware but traditional Thai massage is deeply rooted in the Buddhist philosophy and ways of life. In Thai culture massage is part of our belief system and religion with massage training traditionally provided in Buddhist temples. With this in mind we have decided to explore the origins of Thai massage.
Thai massage is an ancient practice that combines acupressure, Indian herbal principles, and assisted yoga to release muscle stress and relax the body. It is believed that the Thai style of massage is over 2000 years old. The origins of this practice date to the early movement of Buddhism in Asia with the founder of Thai massage, Shivago Komarpaj, being Buddha's physician for many years.
Thai massage, is a combination of influences and medical practices from across Asia, with the style practised today being a fusion of all of these healing traditions.
Thai massage is different from what most regard as massage because it is administered on a comfortable mat on the floor. Both the client and therapist wear loose clothing. The body is compressed, pulled, stretched and rocked in order to clear energy blockages and relieve tension. The therapist uses thumbs, palms, forearms, elbows, knees and feet to open joints, stretch muscles and balance energy.
Thai massage is an ancient healing practice that is ingrained in the culture of our shop and our therapists, it is a respected art form by the Thai people that we at Dee Dee Thai Massage try to bring to Bentleigh everyday.
